How Language switching reloads Stories, cards, and TTS

A parent guide to Tomorrow Kid’s Language setting—parent math gate path, live language picker, same-language TTS preview, cache/DB clear on change, and English fallback.

What Language switching is for

Tomorrow Kid’s Language setting is the parent control that swaps the child’s content language—Stories, Flashcards, Quizzes, Words, and more. It is not a whole-phone system language change. Lists, narration, and TTS follow the locale you pick in Settings.

The default is English (en-US). If a saved locale disappears from the catalog, the app falls back to English and refreshes local tables so content stays available.

How to change Language

  1. Open Settings (parent math gate first—same gate used for Child Information and Home Activities)
  2. Tap the Language row (globe icon)—it shows the current language name
  3. Wait for the picker to load languages from the live catalog (/api/v1/languages)
  4. Tap a language:
    • Same language again — hears a native-name TTS preview and closes; no wipe
    • Different language — clears image cache + downloads, clears local DB tables, saves the new locale, speaks the new name, and posts a locale update so Home lists refetch
  5. Return to Home—Stories, Flashcards, Quizzes, Words, and other locale-aware verticals reload for the new language

Changing language intentionally refreshes cached content so you do not keep yesterday’s English stories mixed with a new locale. Plan a quiet moment when Wi‑Fi is available so fresh packs can download.

A calm way to introduce it at home

  1. Pass the parent math gate yourself before inviting your child into Settings.
  2. Preview the current language once (tap it again) so they hear the native-name TTS.
  3. Switch only when you are ready for lists to reload—mention that Stories and cards will refresh for the new language.
  4. Pair Language with Home Activities: keep the tiles you want visible, then match the locale to the language you speak at home.
  5. If content looks wrong after a catalog change, reopen Settings ▸ Language or wait for the English fallback to settle.

What to try next

After Language is set, open Flashcards or Stories and confirm audio matches the locale. Sound settings (Background Music / Tap Sound) stay separate—those quiet the ambient chrome, not content TTS. When you are ready, open Tomorrow Kid, pass the Settings math gate, and choose Language.
